It could be argued that he never actually saw the princess but knew she was onboard. Hence, the reason he did not recognize her.
I was really hoping for more than ONE plot error that I could explain away, but alas...

Revealing mistakes: After a Stormtrooper stuns Leia in the opening scene, he walks over to inspect her. However, when he tells his companions to inform Lord Vader, the stripes on the tube-like part of his helmet are missing.
Look again Dave... the "tube" thingy was on the Trooper she had shot, not the others.

I doubt yo uwould be able to find them all in one night. It would take a lot of freeze framing.
