Interview with a Stormtroope
Billy sat in the little room that he was growing accustomed to over the weeks he had been meeting Daniella here. He had told her already of most of the beginning battles of the Clone Wars and now was heading into the late battles close to the rise of the Empire. He had been late for all his meetings though and now SHE was late, he sipped his coffee as he amused himself with that thought.
A few hours later Daniella arrived and much unorganized.
“Sorry I’m late Billy, I tried typing up our last few meetings.”
As always Billy just raised his hand in dismissal.
“So what shall I tell you today?” Billy said this with fake enthusiasm (he was being paid to do this)
“Well?” She sat down and thought a little putting her blonde hair behind her ear, “How about Felucia? I heard that was one of the hardest battles of the Clone Wars.”
Billy just looked at his hands and after a few minutes looked up.
“Sure. Felucia, as you said, was very dangerous. The CIS had entrenched themselves and taunted us into coming in there. When we arrived the casualty rate was high. With all the beasties and flesh eating diseases I am surprised I lived.”
Felucia
I was placed with a division that specialized in commando operations and assassination, though we couldn’t rival too many of the special Commando soldiers that we have worked with in the heavier jobs. My team was supposed to find a droid depot that was supporting most of the resistance in the area and we were more than happy to eliminate the threat. We were going to be assisted by the Jedi General Aayla Secura, if she made it. She was with a strike team that was going to draw away most forces to the north so we could come in from the south and begin infiltration.
Me and my brothers fitted our equipment on and checked our weapons. We had a 5 min. ETA and we were going to be ready for anything thrown at us. I raised my rifle and checked all of the components that I had added throughout the time during the Clone Wars.
“Sir,” A younger Clone fresh from Kamino spoke up, “what are we expecting in the facility?”
Tohn turned around, our leader since Mygeeto.
“Well Alias, we are going to be in close quarters situations so that’s why we were all distributed shotguns.” Tohn raised his shotgun and pumped it.
Alias just looked at his shotgun with dismay, he had scored top scores in sniper training and preferred picking off his targets from long distances.
Our pilot, Wren, turned around.
“Hey guys cut the chatter we’re coming up on the factory in 3 minutes and you guys are already whining.”
I put on my helmet and looked at the LAAT/I jockey and shook me head.
“Wren, that is easy for you to say since all you do is provide air strikes. When’s the last time you shot a rifle?”
Out demolitions expert, Repta, turned around and smiled.
“Probably hasn’t shot a rifle since he left training on Kamino.”
Wren just turned around and muttered some insults under his breath. Tohn checked out upon the scenery that was the massive jungle below. Its massive multi-colored trees and massive flowers made the planet look like something from a strange fairytale. Or something if you drank to much alcohol, I’ll let you decide.
“Anti-Air!” Tohn yelled at the top of his lungs and dived away from the door. The rest of the squad ducked and all I remember hearing is the sound of a deafening explosion and us spinning rapidly. When I awoke my body hurt all over. I stood up slowly and dusted myself off.
“Status report! Is everyone alright?!” Tohn was walking around frantically and shouting.
“Here sir,” I got up and put my helmet back on and found my rifle and shotgun still strapped to my back. The rest of the squad started to get up groggily and started leaning up against the remains of our gunship and getting a grasp on what was happening.
“Where’s Wren?” Everyone started walking around the ship. I headed to the drivers seat and immediately looked away and let nausea take over.
“You okay Billy? Oh damn!”
Tohn stepped back and realized why I was almost doubled over and puking. Wren was dead. He had a big piece of the gunship jammed into his gut; there were small cuts all over him from the glass of the cockpit scattering on him. Apparently the missile had hit the front from the left side explaining the violent turns.
“Sir,” Repta turned to the commander, “we should get moving, I hear some tanks in the distance.”
Tohn nodded his approval and we marched off in a certain direction. After some laborious hiking through the harsh jungle we arrived at a small clearing where Kuhn, another squad mate, contacted command.
“What do you want me to say sir?”
Tohn contemplated this for a while and came to a conclusion
“Should we continue our mission?”
Kuhn relayed this to command and he quickly packed up the equipment.
“Sir, we are to proceed on our current course of action and the forces from the north had mad considerable progress and we are to expect their assistance soon.”
Tohn just nodded, luckily we were heading in the direction of the facility and were not but a minute or two away. All we needed was a plan to get inside.
We were in luck their as well. We found and abandoned AAT that was probably mistakenly left behind by droid forces, very unlikely but we took what we could get.
“Ok men pile in deep. Alias can drive this thing.”
Alias didn’t inspire any confidence as we piled into the tight space. It was hot and cramped especially with all of out equipment and Kuhn’s chain gun. We sat there for what seemed like ours except it was pretty much a minute. Alias turned around, this was more like a slight turn of the neck, and informed us we were entering the facility. I held my breath as he also informed us there were still droids in the facility. I could here the noises of the distant battle and prayed it would come soon to our position.
“Ok men,” Tohn spoke up, “this is the plan. We are going to bring this hunk of CIS crap where there is an opening in the lines of AAT tanks. And then we are going to pile out. If they notice us I want Repta and Kuhn to advance to the demolition points. Alias, Billy, and I will provide covering fire and draw them away from you two.”
We nodded and I could feel Alias start to park the tank.
“Ok, Go!”
We piled out and took cover behind the tank, the droids did nothing, and we silently moved from tank to tank stopping once in a while just in case. As we approached a stair well the droids began to take motion toward us the shouted commands of stopped but we did not oblige. They opened fire upon us as we ran up the stairs. Alias fell back and laid down some covering fire as wee ran to the top. At the top Tohn and me stopped and also provided covering fire against the droid technicians now entering the base. I saw Kuhn covering Repta with his chain gun. A blaster bolt clipped the back of my helmet and Tohn instructed me to pay attention, kindly of course.
“Billy, meet up with Repta and Kuhn they are encountering resistance. All I could do is nod and sprint toward where I thought my team was. Sure enough Kuhn and Repta were pinned down, Kuhn was firing torrents of fire from his chain gun and ducking back as it overheated, and Repta shot anyone who got close with his shotgun. I dived next to Repta and fired off a couple of shots from my DC-15 and then had to take cover from a wave of fire coming at me.
“Fire in the hole!” Repta shouted as he pulled out a grenade and lobbed it into the center of the droids. The explosion sounded and I could hear the sound of the droids being blown apart. We rushed from behind cover; I chanced a look at Alias and Tohn. They were pinned down. Repta half fell half crouched next to the facility power cell. He started to set the premacrete charge that he would detonate so this whole place would blow. Kuhn and I tried frantically to provide covering fire for him but we were being overwhelmed.
“Done!” Repta shouted with triumph and started firing on the droids.
“Okay guys we need to get back to Tohn,” I directed this order and we shortly started our brisk march towards our squad mates. Tohn turned around knowing we did our job, he expected only the best from his men.
“Okay men, the battle is literally outside this door we are to get out the door and waste know time blowing the charges.” We nodded indicating we understood. There weren’t many droids left, some had turned attentions to the approaching battle and were destroyed. We charged forward down the steps and opened fire. I noticed something at the bottom of the steps, it was Alias. I looked at him blood was draining on the floor. I couldn’t see if he was alive or dead. Just then he turned over and groaned. I don’t know what went through my mind but it was unintentional. I picked up Alias and ran to catch up with my team. I had abandoned my rifle and pulled out my DC-15s and opened fire to anything blocking my path. I looked up and saw something that truly scared me. Repta had cleared the door and pulled out the detonation device and activated it. Time stood still for me and I pushed forward with all of my might, I heard the earsplitting explosion that rocked the facility and brought it down behind me. I was close to the door. With my remaining strength I threw Alias out the door though he didn’t go far. I felt something hit me square in the back and I fell down and heard great rumbling. I blacked out.
I remember waking up and only seeing blackness. I wondered if I was dead and struggled to get up it was hopeless, I started thinking more of death. Their was great noise surround me but one noise broke through it all.
“Are you okay soldier?”
It was the voice of a female, gentle, pure, and lovely. I felt something clasp around my hand and realized it was her hand. It was gentle but strong. I felt a pull and I immediately started pushing myself toward her. As I cleared the debris and tried to stand up she braced me until I got my balance. Something wiped off my helmet visor and I saw her face. She, to me at that point, was angelic and beautiful. It was Jedi General Aayla Secura. I am glad I had my helmet on because I would have kissed her then and their.
“Are you okay?” she repeated not getting a full answer the first time.
“My name is Billy.”
She laughed a little and to me her laughter was a song.
“You still haven’t answered my question Billy.”
“Oh, yes… I’m okay.”
“I saw what you did that is very admirable and I think it would deserve you a couple more medals.
I was going to hug her but I finally got a grasp on reality again and all I could do was salute her.
“I could use more soldiers like you,” she sat eyeing my and finally said, “Head to the medical tent you received a pretty bad injury to your back.”
Coruscant Diner
“So…?” Daniella sat their as the story got real good wanting more.
“Not much happened after that. I was requested specifically by Aayla to be placed under her command for the duration of the battles on Felucia.”
“Did you love her?” Daniella asked.
“Define love. In some ways ya, I loved her, but she was a Jedi and my commander on top of all that. We became fast friend as the months went on. Then the news came of my transfer and I was… heart broken you could say. Aayla saw me off planet and called me the best soldier that she had ever seen and said she hoped that we both made it through the war so we could meet again under better conditions.”
“And?” said Daniella prying for more.
“Well Order 66 came through and when I received it I immediately thought of her. And I was crushed. I don’t’ know what would have happened if I were still on Felucia. If I would have fired upon her, if I would have just stood back, or if I would have defended her soaked up most of the fire so she could have got away or fired upon my brothers from behind.”
Billy just hung his head and got up he walked out the door without further words.
