Interview with a Stormtrooper
She sat in a cozy and empty room. A diner somewhere on Coruscant. She had just reserved this private room for a special occasion. Her name was Daniela Fray, and she was a New Republic historian. She was almost giddy with her new assignment. She was about to interview a real Stormtrooper. One who had lived through the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War. She couldn’t maintain her excitement, she prayed she would settle down so she wouldn’t seem un-professional to her awaited guest.
There was a knock at the door. Danielle quickly rearranged her datapad on her lap and composed her self to appear almost noble.
“Come in.”
The door opened and in walked the Stormtrooper. She was upholding the dumb thought that he would have walked in with his full Stormtrooper armor and E-11 blaster rifle. He took a seat and saw there was a cup of coffee already sitting there for him.
“So where do we get started?” said the Stormtrooper.
“Your name would be sufficient for now,” replied Denial.
“Well, I suppose I will also give you my military background as well,” he cleared his throat. “I am trooper Alpha-226, the name I chose when given permission for showing individualism, which they did during the Clone Wars, is William, my fellow soldiers called me “Kid” for some unknown reason.”
Daniela quickly tried to right all these notes on her datapad and add in footnote links. “What were trained in specifically?”
“I was a regular soldier;” answered William, “I admit I did have some more advanced training than my Clone brethren.”
“I need to right this down quick so can I just right down Billy for your name?” said Danielle.
Billy just waves his hand indicating he doesn’t really care about what was written for his name. Just so she didn’t make him look bad or his fellow soldiers.
“So I would like to get this done as soon as possible. Now I want you to give me accounts of battles you were in. Or will that be hard for you, I mean emotionally?”
Billy replied, “Sure I think you want me to start off in Geonosis do you? Zero Hour? The first battle of the Clone Wars.”
“I know what it is and yes, please start there.”
Geonosis
The beginning of the Clone Wars was… exciting and frightening. We, my Clone brothers and I, were growing tired of countless simulations and were itching for real combat. When are orders came through we couldn’t contain our joy. Until we arrived on planet.
“Ok men, we are going to be bringing are gunship into the Geonosian arena. Two Jedi and a senator are being captivated. Also earlier the Jedi had led a strike team in and we do not know there current situation.”
The mission sunk in after my commander said those words. This was going to be no walk in the park. As we drew near to the arena I checked my DC-15, making sure that my clip was secure and that it was functional. We opened the gunship doors and immediately the hot wind hit me. I could see a close packed color of blue and green shining. As if my commander was reading my mind he shouted out:
“The Jedi are surrounded in the center by battle droids. Hurry it up!”
I secured my helmet and stood ready to fight, my adrenaline had spiked and the extra edge was very welcome. We dropped we had received a command to create a perimeter around the Jedi, I believe the command was from Master Yoda, who was in a gunship adjacent to us. Immediately as we were not a meter from the ground we did striping runs with our full might unleashed on those droids. Everyone, the droids and Geonosians, didn’t expect this.
When we landed I sat on the end of the gunship and provided covering fire for the Jedi who were coming in. As fate would have it the Jedi who boarded were Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. The senator jumped on as well her name yet eludes me to this day. We took off quickly and evacuated the arena. I was just happy to see I had survived this far. I got up out of the opening and grabbed onto something to keep my self from flying out into the battle. I hate heights.
The vastness of the battle was shown to me as we flew over it. Our AT-TEs were challenging all CIS forces and blowing them away. I saw the massive CIS coreships trying to take off. A techno union ship was taking off and we were to stop it. We fired some missiles at it but they didn’t do much. Then Anakin Skywalker told our pilot to fire just above the fuel cells and what do ya know the kid was right. The missiles hit there target and the ship came tumbling down.
Shortly after we got the orders to chase down Count Dooku, a leader in all this. He was being guarded by two Geonosian starfighters who soon broke off as we fired upon Dooku who was on a speeder bike. The starfighters circled round and fired upon our gunship. As soon as they were about to hit I realized that I had let go of what I had earlier grasped onto to prevent falling off. I was hurled out of the ship and slammed hard into the sandy terrain of that hellhole Geonosis.
Luckily we were trying to avoid being hit and went up a steep dune. Otherwise I think I would have been killed. When I cam through I saw that the senator Padme, that was her name now I remember, was lying down unconscious. I quickly ran to see if she was dead or alive. As I got closer see seemed to be getting up.
“Are you alright?”
She got up and replied.
“Yes.”
“We better get to the forward command post.”
She looked like me as if I just stated that Hutts were the heroes of the galaxy.
“No, Gather up what troops you can. We've got to get to that hanger. Get a transport. Hurry!
We ran off into what I knew was the direction of a command post that held some of our gunships. We approached the command center almost out of breath, some gunships were about to take off, full of troops too.
“Soldiers, we need to take these gunships to a Federation hangar somewhere north of this position two Jedi generals need our aid.”
The soldiers immediately relayed this to their pilots and took us aboard. As we took of I could see that Padme was full of worry and the way she gripped her gun didn’t help her hide this at all. We took off shortly and hauled ass toward the hangar landing just in time to see that a Geonosian solar sailor was taking off. We landed and immediately all of the troops in our ship piled out rushing towards the hangar entrance. As we entered Padme ran off.
“Anakin!”
She wrapped herself around Anakin Skywalker who I could see had one of his forearms severed and his clothes were singed. Form what? I couldn’t tell.
Coruscant Diner
Danielle sat writing down Billy’s last few words.
“Wow. So that’s what it was like on Geonosis?”
Billy shook his head at Denial and replied.
“I got off easy. Many soldiers died that day. Good soldiers. I am glad that I fell out of the gunship, I later found out that just before the first gunship I was in dropped off Anakin and Obi-Wan it was destroyed.”
Denial checked her watch and frowned.
“Well I have to go. Same time tomorrow?”
Billy contemplated this and nodded.
“See ya tomorrow Danielle.”
Billy stood up and walked out heading back to his apartment.
