LOL, There is a " poormans copywrite" that is free, though not a offical on the record copyright...to fully copyright something you need to find out what sorta form you need, For a visual copyright, like on a character, painting, sculpture*ect* you need a Form -VA, for things written you need a form TX, or SA, redgestering fee is about 30 dollers US, then you wait a while, while the offices checks for anything that may interfear with your claim..once thats done they send you abunch of files and paten forms..
a trademark is free, that basically means things like names and such, normall once you publically display a logo, or a name it's an automatic trademark.
Say I wanted to make a character named Bat-Man, now we know that as the DC Character, however, I can still use it, you cant copyright a generic name..As long as MY bat-man does not have the same Look for its logo, the character looks differant, and has a differant story Im legally fine.
And finally there is a regertered TradeMark, which if you look at the Comic Im posting you would see that I have one of those, its marked with a ®.
this is done the same as a copyright, however the Fee is about 75, to 900.00 dollers US, and typically need to be renued every four years, unless you pay the 900.00 or so PER character.. then they are licensed tou you until 20 years after your time of death, at which time if it's not renewed it becomes public domain
