A good story. Most movies suck without a good story.

A good story, that is why I am known to defend the Prequel Trilogy like there is no tomorrow. I will use Star Wars as an example.
Let's compare here:
I-II-III
Great Story Fairly good acting Good directing Good inematography etc.
IV-V-VI
Great Story Fairly good acting Good directing Good cinematography etc.
Seriously, the first item in both of those lists is what makes Star Wars great. After seeing how Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor pulled off their characters and matching them to those in the original I now feel that they are two of the greatest actors of the time. Natalie Portman did fairly well with the dialouge she was given. Liam Neeson, Frank Oz and Ian McDiarmid were fucking awesome: enough said.
Mark Hammil and Carrie Fisher were good in the Star Wars films, but that was because they had to remain on par with Harrison Ford. Mark and Carrie suck in everything else I've seen them in. Sir Alec Guiness, Frank Oz and Ian McDiarmid were fucking awesome: enough said.
And, the dialoge was not so good in ANY of them. Don't try to tell me that it was only the PT, because there are a lot of bad lines in OT as well.
So, you have some shaky acting and some good acting. The critics bash that. So, what do we need to turn to? THE STORY. Star Wars is the greatest story ever told in my mind. It's one of the only stories that I have ever seen that encorporates adventure, excitement, brotherhood, betrayal, courage, sacrafice, the death of dreams, redemption and the birth of dreams.
Story, all the way. Fuck what the critics say. They usually don't know what they're talking about and they couldn't give two shits about what George Lucas does. I say we wipe them out....all of them.
(See, a memorable Prequel line.)
Glad I could help! ;D

I know that, but I used Star Wars as an example of why you should judge a film by the story and not by the other stuff.

Indeed....Bourne supremacy and identity I like because they have great stories and great action but no cgi what so ever..there great...Everything seems that little bit more intense..that little bit more awe inspiring watching a normal guy kicking ass while it is wrapped around a great story.

Good story, it's what I always look for in general, and it can even make action better with a better plot.

Good actors, it all depends upon acting ability for me. I have seen movies with a story line which looks like the writer was inspired to make somthing more sickining then his dog's crap. And yet the actors can make it feel real and actualy make it a award winner. And you can also take a great plot line and fuck it up with actors who couldn't convince you that they exist. ::)I've seen it happen on more then one occassion unfortunantly.

Good looking actresses... because I'm shallow and I'll watch any movie that has a hottie in it.
