My old Mancer's claws were actually rather similar to Plo's saber there, cept for a few slight changes. The emitters were actually atop the knuckles, rather than astride the hand, and there were three. the blade lengths were actually a fair bit shorter as well. this allows for combat similar to unarmed combat, though slightly more deadly.

That saber thing really holds no advantages. It looks nice, but it is shorter and less mobile. I think the hand thingy must have some advantage as the weapon reminds me of a Japanese assassine type weapon - One that you see in Diablo 2 - Expation Set... |

Yeah with the assassin, I imagine it hold greater attack in close melee, or swift attacks. Not very manoeuvrable though.
